Response to an email identified as coming from Paypal
Published on October 18, 2006 By jesseledesma In Internet
Ever since all this conflict with muslins and mexican immigrants started I have been concerned about the possible back lash from govenment entities and private companies against people of race.

About a week ago I recieved an email from some one claiming to work for PAYPAL. The emial is listed here after my respnse.

I am about as non-consequential as you can get. The american government has no case against me and no reason to fear me.

The email claims they are taking the action they are taking because of their cooperation with American federal govenment. Since I know I am of no consequence to any one, the only reason I can see for this email is my spanish last name.

Let me tell you I have very little patience for biggots and racist. Thats why I wrote the respnse I did to the email that was left as a contact email.

I post it here as a reminder of how easy it is to judge people just on superficial basis such as name and birth place.

MY RESPONSE
This is a response to an email that stated in its content that my account with your company is frozen because of cooperation with the American federal government.

I cannot see any reason why the American governemt would have any problem with me.

The only reason I can see that adminsitrators and/or staff of Paypal and Ebay may have trouble with me may be my spanish last name.

This is my response to your request for information to verify my identity.

Keep your racist and biggoted attitudes to your self. I neither need paypal nor Ebay.

I not will spend any of my money at comapnies that hold such racist attitudes.

EMAIL IN QUESTION

Dear jesus lopez,

PayPal as a regulated financial services company is required under law
to assess its customers against certain lists of individuals and
entities which have had sanctions imposed against them. PayPal as a
financial institution is required to comply with these regulations in
multiple jurisdictions where we do business.

Where a potential name match is identified, PayPal's policy is to lock
the account and request further identifying documentation. The decision
to lock your account has been taken solely by PayPal in line with its
compliance policy in regards to the legislation covering financial
sanctions

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however, in order to
regain access to your account, please follow these instructions and
provide the requested documentation within the next seven (7) days:

1. Provide a copy of a government-issued photograph identification
(i.e. passport, driver's license) that provides date of birth; AND
2. Provide a copy of a utility bill verifying your address; AND
3. Include your email address on all copies; AND
4. Fax the information Attention: Compliance to +303-395-2802; OR
5. Mail the documents to the following address:

PayPal Inc, Attention: Compliance
P.O. Box 45950

with all questions at BoEappeal@paypal.com.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Michael

This entire thread is insane. From wo to go, you're all completely mad.

You don't have to be mad to come here....but it helps (to fit in better/not stand out in the crowd)

OK...

I have just read almost every post on this thread and I just want to know a couple of things:

Did jesseledesma ever state that she (or he) tried to sign into the account to see if its open or closed? If it is closed was this before she (he) emailed infomation to the emailer?

Usually, there is a responce, even a 'I got your email - letter' from companies, did she (he) get this responce? What happend after sending a actuall letter to Pay Pal (if one was ever sent)?

To me, it looks, smells and tastes like a scam to get informtion. Plus, if PayPal is doing this because she (he) is on a list, shouldn't she (he) contact the govermnet about the list to be taken off of it considering that other companies will probably end up doing the same thing?

I'll bet Jafo's right nut (since he has already bet his left one) that this is a scam to get info. Despite the fact that scammers usually send out scams by the millions, I think there could be some smart ones who don't want to be looked at as a scam and only send out a few hundredd a week so this still could be a scam.

Anybody can get business address infomation and numbers, they WANTED you to send back an email so that they can verifiy that this email is active.

I just wanted to say that I've recieved the same exact e-mail. I thought it might be a scam, so I typed paypal's url directly into my address bar and tried to sign in, only to get a message that my account was permanently locked.

Does this mean that Jafo will now type, and speak with a higher voice?

Hmmm.....and sing the operatic solo from 'Fifth Element'?

Ah...that was apparently digitally enhanced....not entirely a genuine voice...

You know the real crime in this is that the poster hasn't come back and let us know the final result...

Hmmm, how could someone who's interests are meditation, super strings and conformal field theory possibly find peace and quiet in such a violent country as the US anyway.

I fish a lot.

Well let's just hope you don't lose the bet/find out whether digital enhancement is or isn't required....otherwise (being Threi took the liberty of betting the right one as well) you'll be like a squirrel in the Sahara....nutless

You know the real crime in this is that the poster hasn't come back and let us know the final result...

Yeah, don'tcha just hate it when people do that. It would be good if the poster would come back to inform those with concerns (regarding Ebay/Paypal accounts) of the outcome.

I asked for advice on eBay's paypal discussion board, and this is one of the replies I received:
An FYI - it has nothing to do with a previous debt to Paypal.

It has to do with either your ties to a foreign country, or you have sent money to a foreign country.

That Fax number is for users that may be on the:

Office of Foreign Assets
Control Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list

I think the poster has found out one way or another and is too ashamed to come back and admit he was wrong about PayPal being racist. It's a shame because if he posted how he resolved this, then the other people who find this on Google searches would know what route to take, too.

Perhaps Ebay is busy sueing him for libel...

Jesus - I just forward all emails like this that 'supposedly' come from ebay or paypal to them. spoof@paypal.com and spoof@ebay.com. I've gotten more phishermen trying to get my info. I've even had Chasebank (haha) send me an email once saying my account info was comprimised. Only thing is, I don't even bank there. So paypal/ebay had nothing to do with the email you got. If you still have it, forward it to the address i gave here (spoof@paypal.com).

How appropriate is it for a Super Wizop to spew his/her opinion about any country on this forum?

If you put your article up to the public for comment, then any person, Super WizOP or otherwise is entitled to state their opinion.

The writer will also have to live with that very same opinion he/she solicited.
